Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (KNAC) is the Native Title representative group for the Nyiyaparli People with approximately 400 current members. The Nyiyaparli People are the Traditional Owners of approximately 36,684 square kilometres of land and waters in the east Pilbara region, the Aboriginal communities of Jigalong and Parnpajinya, several pastoral leases and significant mining operations. Locations within the Determination Area are places of particular significance to the Nyiyaparli people, including ceremonial sites, songlines, permanent pools and natural resources.

We place a high value on our people and are now seeking to engage an experienced Housing Officer based in the South Hedland office.

The role

Reporting directly to the Corporate Services Manager, this role is an opportunity to assist KNAC members with purchasing homes, securing rental properties and organising ongoing maintenance of homes purchased through the Housing Project Committee (Mutual Trust). 

Your key responsibilities include all facets of housing management including:

  • Assisting KNAC members with necessary paperwork to purchase a home
  • Advocating and assisting KNAC members in obtaining a rental property 
  • Coordinating workshops on how to manage homes i.e. Bloodwood Tree THRIVE program 
  • Working with stakeholders i.e. builders, service providers, government 
  • Assisting Nyiyaparli beneficiaries with obtaining 100-point ID check 
  • Coordinating and or providing guidance for repairs and maintenance 
  • Liaising with Real Estate Agents, Landlords, Insurance companies and relevant stakeholders to provide appropriate support to tenants to minimise both rental and mortgaged property arrears and minimise tenant responsibility maintenance charges 
  • Following up repairs as per building inspection reports when property purchased ie water damage, painting, gardens 
  • Liaising with the Professional Trustee (Mutual Trust), including attendance at Housing Project Committee meetings to provide reports and updates on relevant matters

Consideration will need to be given that most of these tasks can only be undertaken in the Pilbara. The person will need to travel to Newman and possibly Karratha to service the beneficiaries.

What you need to succeed

You will need sound knowledge of the property market in the Pilbara area and proven experience in property management. You will also need:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and responsively 
  • Demonstrated practical problem solving skills 
  • Experience working effectively with clients with complex needs and an ability to effectively and confidently manage conflict 
  • Ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines
  • Current driver’s license 
  • Experience working with Aboriginal people is highly considered
