The Ngaa Ngayunkurnu Kapukurri Cultural Compact was formed in 2020, with Nyiyaparli traditional owners and Martu custodians coming together to form a mutual agreement to lead the community of Newman forward, on a pathway of mutual respect and understanding.

As the nation looks toward to embedding an Indigenous Voice to Parliament in Australia’s constitution, the Cultural Compact plays a similar role at a local level, empowering the Aboriginal people to dream of a better future, laying down new foundations and planning for a new tomorrow.

The Cultural Compact invites local organisations and businesses to be part of that dream, to commit to embracing new ideas and ways of walking together for the betterment of the whole community.

We continue to work in this important partnership to bring improvements to the communities of Newman.

Our recent involvement includes initial input into the East Newman revitalisation project and started with a discussion between some of our senior Nyiyaparli and Martu men, including Uncle David, mapping out a future in East Newman to uphold Aboriginal culture and traditions.

These Nyiyaparli and Martu elders confirmed that the goal of improvements in East Newman needs to support families to remain together through all stages of life with culture strong. To achieve this, improvements and access to housing, parks and facilities, including a corner store is required.

This meeting follows the on-going engagement and co-design with Nyiyaparli, Martu and other stakeholders on East Newman over the past few years.
