Last week, Roderick Parker, Carol-Anne Tucker, and Noel Taylor from the Nyiyaparli Ranger team started their CASA RePL drone pilot accreditation as part of Cohort 1 of the Pilbara Cultural Land Management Project (PCLMP) drone program.
The team completed some classroom-based theory on Tuesday morning before heading out to Coondiner Pool for the practicals on Wednesday and Thursday. This was the first of 3 training sessions across the first half of year which will see Roderick, Carol-Anne, and Noel progress through the crawl, walk, run stages of the course. A further two sessions will be held in June which will see them complete their accreditation and gain their pilot licences.
A second cohort of three will complete their accreditation in the second half of the year.
The rangers hope to be able to apply the skills they learn in upcoming and future cultural mapping, weed mapping, and vegetation survey work, for example. The drone training will compliment other training the ranger team are doing later in the year which is focused on data collection, management, and analysis.
Big thanks to trainers Grady and Danielle from Winyama for your drone and training expertise, to PCLMP Coordinator Ebony for joining us for the week, and Dan for your all-round assistance across the week. It was great to have you join us out on Country. We’re already looking forward to the next part of the course in June.
