Recently Nyiyaparli representatives Michael Stream, Raegen Roberts, Jayleen, Jasmin, Jason Snr, Jason Jnr, Jackson and Jayden Anthony, along with KNAC’s environmental Advisor Michelle Gardner, attended a rehabilitation fieldtrip hosted by Roy Hill.
We learned about the different stages and processes involved in rehabilitation including how Roy Hill work through appropriate storage areas for waste rock for the best rehabilitation outcomes, the design process involved for waste rock landforms (WRL’s), the application of rock armour for stability, the use of drones to make sure the shapes and angles of WRLs are close to the original design so that they are safe and stable, storage and application of topsoil, ripping, seed collection, storage and sowing. We got some hands-on experience with measuring out seed proportions and got to sow a freshly ripped rehabilitation area.
It was great to see some areas that Roy Hill have successfully rehabilitated and learn about the different monitoring programs that Roy Hill use to make sure that these areas are healthy and sustainable.
Roy Hill and KNAC are looking to hold more of these fieldtrips, working towards having Nyiyaparli representatives involved in rehabilitation activities and getting experience with monitoring rehabilitation success.
