KNAC attended the opening of the $61.4 million Newman Health Service on Wednesday 3rd May with Premier Mark McGowan and Health Minister Jade Sanderson officially opening the new hospital.

KNAC were awarded three Percent for Art contracts in October 2021 and over the past 18 months worked with senior Nyiyaparli, art consultants Sharmila Wood and Mossenson Art Projects and artist Mel McVee to create a Welcome to Country piece, and bush food and bush medicine inspired artworks, showcased at the entrance and throughout the hospital. It was great show off some of these pieces to the Premier and Minister on the opening day. Signs throughout the hospital also feature Nyiyaparli language.

The art pieces alongside those from Martumilli help to provide a warm and welcoming environment and contribute to a positive and nurturing experience for patients and visitors.

Many thanks to Nyiyaparli TO’s David Stock, Cheryl Yuline and Michael Stream for your assistance with the project. Thank you also to WA Country Health and the Pilbara Development Commission for your support of the Percent for Art Program.

Thank you also to Noel Taylor for delivering an engaging Welcome to Country, helping to open the hospital.
