KNAC is pleased to confirm that we have now been provided with access to the WA Firearms Licence Portal. This allows the CEO to register a written permission on the portal for KNAC members who apply for a WA Firearms Licence (new or renewal).  This letter acknowledges our members are Nyiyaparli Common Law Holders with Native Title rights to hunt on Nyiyaparli country.  This means WA Police can then consider this when looking at the application.

To be clear, it does not allow KNAC to issue a Firearms Licence- that is the role of WA Police. They have advised this process includes lots of other checks before they may issue or renew the firearms licence, and the whole process may take up to 3 months.

If you have questions or require support with this process, you can directly contact the Firearms Act Reform Project Team at transition.queries@police.wa.gov.au or 1300 894 474

Please also be aware that our CEO only has authority to provide the written permission to Nyiyaparli Common Law Holders in recognition of their Native Title rights to hunt on Nyiyaparli Country, so this support does not include other people living or working on Nyiyaparli Country. Those people can apply to other organisations for written permissions and the Firearms Act Reform Project Team (contact details above) can assist in confirming who they might be.

Finally, there are also measures in place to enable use of firearms on Nyiyaparli Country where other leases apply- such as mining or pastoral leases. Again, the Firearms Act Reform Project Team can assist with more information but permission to bring firearms onto these leases requires the written permission of the lease holder, and the lease holder is limited by law in how many permissions they can approve.

In the case of the Kurtuwa (Ethel Creek), Marillana and Walagunya pastoral leases managed by KNAC, Temporary Hunting Permissions are required to bring firearms onto the properties and this permission must be registered on the Karlka Pastoral Temporary Hunting Permission Register by our Station Manager, John Rowe. You can apply to be on the register by scanning the QR Code KNAC MEMBER KARLKA PASTORAL ACCESS information flyer (below) is available from the Hedland and Newman Offices, or by contacting John or Karlka Commerce GM, Angela Nicholls at our Newman Office. Please note Temporary Hunting Permission last for a maximum period of 14 days. You must re-apply after 14 days.
