Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (KNAC) is the Native Title representative group for the Nyiyaparli People with approximately 400 current members. The Nyiyaparli People are the Traditional Owners of approximately 36,684 square kilometres of land and waters in the east Pilbara region, the Aboriginal communities of Jigalong and Parnpajinya, several pastoral leases and significant mining operations. Locations within the Determination Area are places of particular significance to the Nyiyaparli people, including ceremonial sites, songlines, permanent pools and natural resources.

KNAC is the endorsed and authorised heritage service provider for the Nyiyaparli people.

The Nyiyaparli Ranger Program is a component of the work managed by KNAC, employing a casual project-based ranger team that undertakes cultural land management activities on-Country.

We place a high value on our people and are now seeking to engage an experienced Ranger Program Project Officer (Male) to be based in the South Hedland or Newman office.

The role

Reporting directly to the Ranger Program Coordinator, this role is an opportunity to contribute to on-the-ground cultural land management activities in line with the Nyiyaparli People & Country Plan.

These activities include cultural knowledge transfer projects with Senior Nyiyaparli, cultural heritage site management and cultural mapping projects, fire management, water monitoring, feral animal control, plant and animal monitoring, threatened species management and weed management.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Ranger Program Coordinator in the preparation of work plans.
  • Assist with trip planning, logistics and on-the-ground project coordination, and the delivery of ranger training programs, with the ability to step up and lead project planning as required.
  • Build positive and productive relationships with key partners including industry, government agencies, the Pilbara Cultural Land Management Project, and other regional stakeholders.


What you need to succeed

You will need experience working on Country or in remote locations in conservation and land management, community development or related fields. We are also seeking the following:

  • Willingness to travel and comfortable with camping on Country for up to a week at a time.
  • Experience in operating 4WDs, ATV’s, chainsaws/brushcutters, weed spraying equipment and ability to undertake prescribed burning activities (or ability/willingness to learn), and an understanding of safe operating practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in a culturally appropriate way with Aboriginal people and foster an environment of two-way learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate calmly in a cross-cultural environment and to demonstrate understanding, respect and flexibility to cultural and social differences.
  • Manual C Class Drivers Licence
  • WA Working with Children’s Clearance (or willingness to obtain)
  • Competency in the use of computers and sound administrative skills
  • No impediments to holding a firearm licence
